Where the Light Lingers on Ravine Trail - 1
24 X 30 inches, Oil on burlap, 2022

These two paintings depict the same late autumn scene along Ravine Trail near Fennville, Michigan, yet they represent two different ways of experiencing the landscape.

The earlier version (Where the Light Lingers on Ravine Trail – 1) remains closer to direct observation. Its softer light, naturalistic colors, and atmospheric depth reflect the experience of standing quietly within the woods as the day draws toward evening. The later version moves beyond observation toward interpretation. The colors become more expressive, the forms more simplified, and the fallen leaves transform into a luminous river of orange and gold flowing through the composition. Rather than recording what the landscape looked like, the painting seeks to express what it felt like to be there.

The earlier version possesses a profound sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to enter the scene and experience the quiet beauty of the forest. The later version sacrifices some of that stillness in favor of wonder, energy, and emotional resonance. In this sense, the two paintings reflect complementary aspects of our relationship with nature: one rooted in presence, the other in memory and meaning.

Together, they remind me that the beauty of the natural world is not found solely in what we see, but also in how those experiences continue to live within us long after the moment itself has passed.
