Summer Looking North, Peachbelt Studio
Oil on vellum paper, 11 × 14, 2026
Summer Looking North, Peachbelt Studio began as a plein-air painting at Peachbelt Studio and Gallery in Fennville, Michigan, and was later completed in my studio. I was drawn to the way the view opened between the dark vertical trees and the studio building, revealing a landscape filled with shifting greens, distant blue forms, and the warm light of a Michigan summer.
What interested me most was the structure of the view itself. The trees and building create a kind of frame, while the open field draws the eye outward toward the distant landscape. Finishing the painting later in the studio gave me the opportunity to strengthen those relationships while preserving the immediacy of the original plein-air experience.
